Leaving a Legacy

In the remote Kenyan village of Dzendereni, education, nutrition and clean water have been the community’s largest hurdles. Children with no access to clean water once went to school in a mud hut with dirt floors, using their own legs as desks and hoping the rain held off.

Today, those same children learn in rooms with solid walls and sit in desks. Enrollment has more than tripled from 114 students to 395 in a country where an education can increase life expectancy by decades. They also drink clean water from a cistern that’s fed by a collection system on the roof of the school. All this is thanks to the efforts of CrossFit Inc., and now CrossFit affiliates are getting involved.

A recent weekend fundraiser at NorCal CrossFit raised the funds needed to build a school room in the village of Majengo, and students will be inside the new building by the end of January. Other affiliates have raised funds to build a 35,000-liter cistern in the village of Peku, and more projects are on the way as the CrossFit affiliate community supports the efforts in Kenya. These projects are literally changing lives.

“CrossFit’s brightest moment may be on the podium and under the spotlight in Los Angeles, but its longest legacy may be 10,000 miles away,” narrator Marty Cej explains.
